Second Opinion Health, Inc. is a digital health company that develops software solutions to uniquely apply the power of data science to health. Our initial product addresses migraine headaches to empower sufferers to take control of managing migraines and to live better lives.
Migraine attacks are debilitating and disabling. Once the attack starts, it takes a long time to get rid of the pain and often people end up in the emergency room. Eliminating migraine attacks before they start is of enormous importance to migraine sufferers. But figuring out the onset of an attack before it actually starts remains a major challenge for the medical community.
Migraines affect 39 million people in the US alone and costs $13 billion in provider fees and drug costs. It represents an area of significant unmet medical need. Migraine is the third most common chronic disorder in the world and ranks sixth among over 300 diseases when it come to the burden it represents. The triptan class of medications is generally considered the standard of care with over 14 million prescriptions written annually.
Migraine causes are unknown and there is no cure for migraines. For people with migraines certain triggers can set off an attack. Triggers are individual – not everyone has the same triggers and not every time. Triggers can be physiological, environmental and dietary. Some triggers are difficult to control. The most common difficult to control triggers are weather, hormones, sleep, activity and stress.
The widespread use of smartphones, availability of wearable devices and advances in multivariate pattern analysis via machine learning algorithms allow for development of individual predictive models that can determine the likelihood of an individual developing a migraine on a given day. Such models are based upon objectively measured biometric parameters (e.g. heart rate), physiological parameters (e.g. sleep, activity, stress), environmental conditions (e.g. weather) and patient reported symptoms. Using machine-learning algorithms to explore this dataset that is collected for each patient, the optimal combination of factors that most accurately predict the likelihood of a migraine attack is determined.
We are currently engaged in a clinical study in collaboration with a large pharmaceutical company and a world renowned medical research group. The study is titled: “Individualized Prediction of Migraine attacks using a Mobile Phone App and Fitbit”. You can read more about the study in the ClinicalTrials.gov registry of clinical studies.
